Building Subjects

Building Subjects, the fourth issue of Standpunkte Magazine, is a collaboration between the architect De Peter Yi, the art historian Nancy P. Lin, and the graphic design studios Normal and Some All None. The publication revolves around collective housing in China, an architectural challenge expressive of the country’s ongoing negotiations between its rich history and undetermined future. The study combines typological research with the modes of the architectural manifesto by establishing an exchange between cultural-historical observations, the consideration of contemporary socio-economic pressures, and evolving architectural aspirations. Through a close reading of spaces from monumental utopian communes in Beijing to round earthen dwellings in the Fujian province, Building Subjects stages collective housing as a key to residential architecture in China. The publication is simultaneously inward and outward looking, and this duality is also reflected in its meticulously composed layout: documentary photography and detailed axonometric drawings are juxtaposed to establish a correspondence between old and new, between reality and projection.

6 Gespräche über Architektur

Suspense/Surprise – was hiesse es, dieses Begriffspaar auf die Architektur zu übertragen? Im Gegensatz zur plumpen Ueberraschung spektakulärer Bauformen wäre Suspense vielleicht der präzise Einsatz architektonischer Mittel, um eine bestimmte Wirkung im Betrachter auszulösen. Wie im Film, braucht es auch in der Architektur Meisterschaft, um Suspense zu erzielen und nicht bloss Surprise. Für diese Publikation baten wir sechs junge praktizierende Architektinnen und Architekten, sich ein Gebäude auszuwählen, das sie beschäftigt, vielleicht sogar geprägt hat. Sie sollten den Entwerfer oder die Entwerferin des Gebäudes treffen und ein langes Gespräch darüber führen. Entlockt ihm seine Intensionen, seine Kniffe, forderten wir sie auf, vielleicht ein Geheimnis. Das Lob der Wettbewerbsjury des Standpunkte Magazins: «Die Jury hält das eingereichte Konzept für schlüssig und spannungsvoll. Die Begegnung von jung und alt, beziehungsweise unbekannt und bekannt in Interviews eröffnet neue Blickwinkel und entspricht einem Grundanliegen von Standpunkte. Durch das Element des Schwarzbalkens wird die vergleichsweise simple Versuchsanordnung, in Frage und Antwort, neu interpretiert. Das gewählte grafische Konzept und seine Mittel befördern den anspruchsvollen Inhalt.

This Will_This

This Will —This was awarded to be the first project, in a competition in the fall of 2008. Architect Jesse LeCavalier, architectural historian John Harwood, and designer Guillaume Mojon investigate with their analysis of bar codes and related encryptions the thresholds and overlaps between material and immaterial media. The particular attention of the authors is turned to the display of information in a non-linear interplay of different media. By means of a historical and spatial analysis of the ambivalent nature between built space and information space, they explore the organizational complex of the built environment, propagating encrypted architecture and urbanism as models to speculate for the future of our surroundings, rather than to focus on their particular form.
