"Kind of Blue": Aldo Rossi and the Cemetery of San Cataldo in Modena
Aldo Rossi and Gianni Braghieri submitted a proposal for the new cemetery of Modena in 1971. Their winning competition entry, entitled "L'azzurro del cielo" underwent significant changes before construction started in 1976. Even if the cemetery of San Cataldo was never completed, it can be considered Rossi's opus magnum. Interwoven with his own biography, it was designed just after a car accident that prompted the concept of an "osteological architecture." In their monumental scale, the skeletal buildings of San Cataldo remodel the funereal typology of the nineteenth century to come to terms with the public representation of death and its inevitable melancholy.
