DAM
Architectural Considerations on the Modification of Territory
Ilmar Hurkxkens, Zurich (architecture)
Filip Geerts, Antwerp (writing)
Philipp Herrmann, Zurich (graphic design)

"Along seven theses and seven drawings the proposed publication wants to look at dams through an architectural lens in a format that is both manifesto and commentary. A manifesto on what should be considered architecture and a commentary on a subject of both historical and contemporary significance. Dams engage the landscape, society, history, and future concerns in a concrete way. The proposed publication is a collaborative effort about a collaborative effort. A Gesamtkunstwerk about a Gesamtkunstwerk. Dam-builders were engineers, (landscape) architects, planners, (geo-)politicians, etc. the Tennessee Valley Authority proposed a lasting graphic lecacy just as much as "electricity for all". Hollein's "Alles ist Architektur" can not be true or false in the same way as in 1960, but at least this publication will be able to claim 'Talsperren sind Architektur'."

The Jury's Praise
The jury univocally found this proposal to be most thought over and well crafted with a strong conceptual framework. The well structured manifesto-like presentation of infrastructure as a protoform of architecture was considered interesting and promising as a project within this publication series. The carefully assembled proposal documents typographic rigor, a structuring use of color, and suggests well-chosen modes of representation for each individual thesis.
